Jess Williamson

INDIE-FOLK TEXAN

- Jess Williamson’s Time Ain’t Accidental is out now on Mexican Summer.

What music are you currently grooving to?

I am loving Joy’all from Jenny Lewis and In The Air from Anna St Louis. They are both great albums that came out the same day as my record Time Ain’t Accidental, so it’s kind of like we all share a birthday.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album?

Ys by Joanna Newsom… she is my hero and that album was my introduction to her music back in 2006. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it? I think it was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette or maybe Pieces Of You by Jewel. Both were in heavy rotation when I first started to buy CDs, and I probably got them at Barnes & Noble or Walmart.

Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be? Dolly Parton, of course! Ever since I was a tiny little girl, I’ve looked up to

Dolly and wanted to be just like her. Not much has changed.

What do you sing in the shower? Whatever is stuck in my head. Today it was Miranda Lambert. I love last year’s Palomino album.

What is your favourite Saturday night record?

Time Of The Preacher by Willie Nelson. It’s such a classic and reminds me of sitting on the back porch on Saturday nights at my mom’s house. And your Sunday morning record? I love instrumental and ambient music in the mornings, and I have a super-long playlist I’m constantly adding to called Morning Pages. And my all-time favourite record to listen to on a Sunday morning is Brossa D’Ahir by Pep Laguarda & Tapineria. It is absolutely perfect Mediterranean folk music recorded in 1977 in Mallorca.
