RAILS AND DAPOL TEAM UP FOR AN ‘88’…
The latest collaboration between Rails of Sheffield and Dapol means that the Stadler Class 88 electro-diesel locomotive will be produced in ‘OO’ gauge.
The ten-strong Class 88 fleet was ordered by Direct Rail Services in 2013, creating the UK’S first dual-model locomotive to take power from overhead 25kv AC catenary. Regulars on Anglo-scottish intermodal traffic, often operating in pairs, the ‘88s’ also work well away from the wires, powered by a 950hp, 12-cylinder Caterpillar diesel unit.
With an excellent Class 68 already in its catalogue, the similar ‘88’ is something of a ‘no-brainer’ for Dapol.
However, the Class 88s will be available exclusively from Rails of Sheffield.
Boasting a high detail and mechanical specification, as per the ‘68’, the new model will also feature a five-pole motor with twin flywheels, a Plux22 DCC interface and a comprehensive lighting suite. Etched nameplates will be supplied for optional fitment.
Four versions have been announced thus far, including the unique ‘Cool Move’ advertising livery currently carried by 88010. Each version will be offered in Dcc-ready, Dcc-fitted and DCC sound-fitted format, the latter two featuring working pantographs.
Pre-orders are being taken now for just a £30 deposit.
