Chieftain’s the boss

The Indian Motorcycle Chief is almost a household name, but this new take on the classic has shaken up its heritage. The Chieftain’s styling makeover involves more than just the fairing, front fender/ mudguard and wheels. The hard panniers are reshaped, too, and are slimmer and sleeker than the old model’s while the saddle has been replaced with a new Rogue Gunfighter item that’s slimmer and enhances the profile. Plus, you’ve got LED lights, a bigger front wheel and the bike comes in matt white, bronze, or black with a blacked-out engine. If you prefer the trad look, the Chieftain Classic has the old styling.

There are three riding modes: Tour, Standard and Sport, and a Rear Cylinder Deactivation system which cuts the rear cylinder at standstill to help keep you cool. Another change is the uprated Ride Command Infotainment System or, in other words, the combined satnav, stereo, instruments and onboard computer which operates through a touchscreen. Already superslick, effective, Bluetoothfriendly and all-round impressive, the system allows you to switch through the riding modes while its audio system has been further improved to a banging 100W.

It’s something of a Dark Horse…

This 1.8-litre, mono-perched, naked cruiser, which full of fuel weighs the same as two Yamaha MT-07s, might not be everyone’s idea of biking nirvana, especially with a £22,349 price tag. But ridden in the right environment, the new Indian Springfield Dark Horse is quite a thing.

The Springfield gets a light update for 2019, including selectable throttle maps (Tour, Standard and Sport) and a rear cylinder that cuts at tickover in the heat (when ambient temperature exceeds 15°C), to stop it roasting you in traffic. While the standard Springfield is caked in chrome, has a pillion seat, screen and a 16in front wheel, this Dark Horse version has a blacked-out engine, exhaust and cycle parts, a smaller front mudguard and a snazzy diamondcut 19in front wheel.

Big-mile Challenger

Indian’s new-from-the-groundup Challenger isn’t just the slickest, most formidable bigcube mile-muncher they’ve ever produced, but the formidable liquid-cooled V-twin engine packs the most punch, too and was conceived to transport rider, pillion and luggage big distances in supreme comfort.

The new 1769cc PowerPlus motor is built to waft. In top gear it’ll purr along at 70mph with the gentle tremor of its super-sized, short-stroke pistons lolloping away beneath you at just 2800rpm. It might be born to cruise and it has noticeably more instant grunt than Indian’s air-cooled Thunder Stroke-engined machines, but drop it down out of its tall, overdrive sixth gear and it gets a serious shift on, not just for a 361kg (dry) behemoth - it accelerates like a wild thing.
