Corrie’s Katie vows to go out in style

-

KATIE McGlynn is preparing for her final scenes to be screened on Coronation Street - and she bowed out in style in a white mini dress with eye-catching cape detail at the Inside Soap Awards.

The Rochdale actress, who has received high praise for her role as ailing Sinead Osbourne, teamed her white dress with vampish dark purple lipstick and smoky eye make-up.

Katie, who has been in the soap for six years, has already filmed her last scenes as new mum and newlywed Sinead, who is dying of cervical cancer.

Speaking in the latest edition of OK!, out now, she said of lovable character Sinead’s heartbreaking scenes, due to air this autumn: “I said we should finish with the saddest ending because life’s not a fairytale.

“I’ve been affected by people in my family who had cancer and I wanted to showcase that.”

She added: “I think a soap should reflect real life.

“I’m saddened that I’m leaving, but I want to create awareness.

“I’m so grateful for this storyline, it’s like a nice big springboard to jump off rather than leaving in a taxi. If I’m going to go, I want to go with a bang.”

Katie has received messages from girls telling her she’s saved their life because they went for a smear test after watching Sinead’s harrowing story.

The Underworld machinist was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year while she was pregnant and temporarily stopped her treatment as she was worried it would harm her unborn child.

Sinead, who went on to have a baby boy Bertie, was devastated to discover on her wedding day last month that her cancer had returned and had spread and she only has weeks to live. The storyline has helped to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening after Sinead was told she couldn’t have had a smear test because she was too young at 24.

Katie, 26, was reunited at the awards with former Corrie co-stars Bhavna Limbachia, who played Rana Habeeb, and Cassie Bradley, whose bad girl character Natalie Watkins made waves in the soap earlier this year. Bhavna, whose character died in the collapse of the Underworld factory in March, looked chic in a figurehugging black lace dress and Natalie looked striking in elegant black gown.

Fan favourite Maureen Lipman won best newcomer for her hilarious role as Tyrone Dobbs’ sharp-tongued grandmother Evelyn Plummer. Hollyoaks triumphed on the night with the best soap award, and its stars Adam Woodward and Stephanie Davis won best actor and actress.
