THE much-anticipated Walking with the Snowman trail opens next week at a spectacular lights switch-on event.

It’s the first-ever lights switch-on at Salford’s MediaCity, and The Snowman character himself will be there to flick the switch and then meet and greet families.

A festive evening of entertainment, food and drinks is promised at the event, which runs from 5pm until 8pm on Thursday.

The lights will be turned on at 6.30pm.

X-Factor contestant Russell Jones will be among the line-up and there will be performances from local groups, including Salford Steel and the Reflections dance troupe.

It will mark the official launch of the family-friendly trail, which features 12 giant snowman sculptures, themed around the song The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Each sculpture is being designed and decorated by one of 12 talented artists, all of whom painted a bee for the Bee in the City trail, which captured the hearts of Manchester’s residents and visitors this summer.

Visitors have until Friday, November 16 to watch the artists painting their sculptures through the windows of a ground floor retail unit at the Lowry Outlet.

The Christmas lights event will be hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell, and also coincides with the opening of Santa’s grotto and the Christmas Makers Market at Lowry Outlet.

Little ones can step into ‘the magical Claus’ Christmas cabin’ to meet Santa, hear stories from Mrs Claus and receive a special toy on their visit. Sessions, costing £8 per child, are running from Thursday, November 22 until Christmas Eve, and can be booked online.

The Makers Market is running from November 22 until November 25, featuring arts, crafts, food and drink producers from across the north west.

There will be a host of hot food stalls and street entertainers bringing some seasonal sparkle over the four days. To find out more about the trail, visit www.walkingwiththesnowman.co.uk.
