A POLICE officer was injured after being hit by a colleague’s van as he chased a suspect.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment to leg injuries following the incident near Mandley Park, Higher Broughton, Salford, the M.E.N. understands.

Footage seen by the M.E.N. shows a police van pulling up at the junction of Leicester Road and Symons Street.

An officer jumps out and starts to pursue a man standing on the pavement, but as the GMP patrol follows the pair onto Symons Street, the officer on foot is hit by the van.

Detectives said it showed how officers ‘put themselves in difficult situations to keep our streets safe on a daily basis.’

The collision took place at around 3pm yesterday.

A police spokesman later confirmed that the officer who was hit by the van was chasing a man he believed to be wanted.

A 29-year-old was arrested after the collision on prison recall, the spokesman added. A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 3.03pm. “We sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene. The patient was taken to North Manchester General Hospital with leg injuries.” Det Chief Insp Amanda Delamore, from GMP’s Salford Borough, said: “Officers put themselves in difficult situations to keep our streets safe on a daily basis, and sadly on this occasion it has ended with one of our officers in hospital. “My thoughts are with the officer, we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to have him back protecting us all as soon as possible.” A police spokesman said: “At around 3pm on Thursday, August 16, police searching for a wanted man were on Leicester Road in Higher Broughton. During the search a man attempted to run away from police. One of the officers gave chase but was unfortunately then involved in a collision with a police van. He has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries to his legs. “An 29 year-old man was arrested on prison recall.” Det Chief Insp Amanda Delamore
