New family festival will celebrate city cultures
A FREE event to finish off this year’s spectacular summer and celebrate everything that makes Manchester buzz will take over Platt Fields Park next month.
The family-friendly Festival of Manchester – a new annual event for the city – takes place on Saturday, September 1.
The festival is a celebration of all the different communities that help make Manchester such a vibrant place, and will bring together everything that is great about them and the city.
The day will see a non-stop programme of activities and performances to keep everyone entertained throughout, including food, fashion, music, colour, crafts, culture and sport.
Three different performance areas will feature a wide and lively mix of music, dance and circus acts into the evening as the sun sets, and walkabout entertainments throughout the park will add to the atmosphere.
A delicious and diverse selection of food will be available all day, and plenty of seated areas will be available for those who want to take the weight off their feet and enjoy the spectacle of the day.
With activities as diverse as BMX, American football, basketball tournaments, cycling try-outs, yoga, street sports and pop-up family games on offer, even the most energetic visitors will be kept on their toes.
There will also be arts and craft activities on offer at The Bazaar, as well as makers’ stalls.
Coun Luthfur Rahman, executive member for schools, culture and leisure at Manchester council, said: “The festival is a chance for every different community living in Manchester to show off the best bits of their culture.
“Behind the fun is the serious contribution that culture makes to our city, and especially the value of the communities that make our diverse and vibrant city such a great place to live, work and play.
“It’s going to be a fantastic fiesta – a real celebration of our different communities, our dance, food, music, crafts, sports, traditions and languages.
“What better way to finish off this spectacular summer?
“So come down, get involved in some fantastic free activities and help us celebrate our differences and everything that helps make Manchester so amazing.”
