THERE was a heavy armed police presence in Liverpool as two men appeared in court over the killings of Paul Massey and John Kinsella.

Steven Boyle, 35, and Mark Fellows, 37, were detained after a joint operation between Greater Manchester Police and Merseyside Police.

Both men are charged with murder and attempted murder after Mr Kinsella’s partner was also shot at as she fled the scene of his killing in St Helens last month.

Mr Kinsella, 53, who was originally from Everton, was fatally shot while walking his dog on a footpath near the St Helens Linkway and the M62 motorway at 7am on May 5.

Mr Massey, 55, who was gunned down outside his home in July 2015, was a well-known figure in his home city of Salford.

The father-of-five was shot dead outside his home in the Clifton area of Salford on July 26, 2015.

Five other people recently arrested in connection with the two murders have been released under investigation.

Mr Boyle, of Sandiway, Heywood, appeared for his first magistrates appearance in a grey tracksuit and stood as the charges were read to him.

He confirmed his details and that he understood the charges.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court, but the proceedings were dealt with as if he was appearing before magistrates.

Judge Clement Goldstone QC remanded Mr Boyle in custody until Thursday, when he will return to Liverpool Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing.

Judge Goldstone explained to Mr Fellows, of Sandy Lane, Warrington, who first appeared in court on Saturday, that his next appearance will be a pre-trial and preparation hearing in September.

Depending on pleas, a provisional trial date has been set for November at Liverpool Crown Court.

Both men have been remanded in custody.
