A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of the manslaughter by ‘gross negligence’ of a woman almost eight years ago.

Detectives said they ‘haven’t stopped’ investigating young mum Rebecca Wilson’s death in Stockport – and revealed ‘new information’ has been received.

Ms Wilson, a former model and teaching assistant, died at her home on Green Lane, Heaton Norris, in May 2010. She was 28.

A post-mortem examination later revealed she died of a morphine overdose – she had been prescribed morphine after surgery for a rare spinal condition.

The case led to the arrest of a man at the time on suspicion manslaughter by neglect, police confirmed. A file was sent by officers to the Crown Prosecution Service but a decision was made later to take no further action against him.

The M.E.N. can now reveal that police swooped on a street in Hale, Trafford, just after 7am yesterday and a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

He was also held on suspicion of rape and assault, relating to a separate investigation into the alleged rape and assault of a 31-year-old woman. He was taken into custody for questioning.

Neighbours told how the man was led away in handcuffs.

One said: “There was a lot of police officers and a van parked up. They knocked on the door and he came out and was arrested. It was soon all over. He was just handcuffed and led away.”

Confirming the arrest, Detective Sergeant Paul Rees said: “Although a lot of time has passed since Rebecca’s death, we haven’t stopped investigating and due to new information that we have received, we have been able to progress with the investigation.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing, however, and I would urge anyone with any information to please come forward.”

A police statement said: “Police investigating the death of a woman from Stockport have made an arrest. On Saturday, May 15, 2010, officers were called to reports that a woman had died in hospital.

“A post-mortem examination revealed that the woman – formally identified as 28-year-old Rebecca Wilson – died of a morphine overdose.

“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rebecca’s death was launched and a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by neglect. A file was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service, which made the decision to take no further action and the man was released.

“Today, a 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

“He has also been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, which relates to a separate investigation into the rape and assault of a 31-year-old woman. He remains in custody.”
