Magpies exit FA Trophy despite Danilo’s double

-

Weymouth 3, Maidenhead United 2 Danilo Orsi-Dadomo’s first half brace wasn’t enough to prevent Maidenhead United exiting the FA Trophy at the third round stage after a 3-2 defeat at league rivals Weymouth.

United welcomed manager Alan Devonshire back to the dugout for the first time since the side’s 3-1 win over Solihull Moors back on October 31.

However, Devonshire’s presence didn’t have the desired effect in the early stages as the Magpies conceded twice in the opening half-hour.

The Terras have struggled for form in the National League this season, but they took the lead in the 16th minute when Cody Cooke took the ball around Josh Oluwayemi and tapped the ball into the empty net.

They then doubled their lead on the half-hour when Manny Parry was adjudged to have brought down Alefe Santos and Josh McQuiod dispatched the penalty.

Both sides were somewhat stretched by injuries heading into the clash and it looked like that might have caught up with the home side as the game neared half-time.

In the 42nd minute Orsi netted his first of the game to half the deficit, and the striker found the net again to draw the Magpies level on the stroke of half-time.

Maidenhead made a strong start to the second half, with Shaun Donnellan forcing the Terras keeper into a smart save in the 46th minute before firing just past the post a couple of minutes later.

But the visitors’ recovery was firmly halted when Corey Jordan tapped home his first goal for the club from a corner in the 54th minute.

Cooke forced Oluwayemi into a fine save in the 79th minute before the Magpies applied pressure in search of a late equaliser in the final minutes.

Again it was Donnellan who came closest, rattling the crossbar with a strike from distance with five minutes to play.

However the home side held firm through five minutes of injury-time to book their place in the fourth round of the competition.

United can now focus on their league campaign. They’ll get back to action at home to Wealdstone on Boxing Day.
