Stay active with river walks
RESIDENTS aged over 55 are being encouraged to keep active by walking their local canal or river.
The Canal & Rivers Trust, in partnership with Sport England, have created a 12-week ‘Active Waterways’ programme to encourage older residents to walk their local canals or rivers.
Those interested can sign up for the free programme of weekly one-hour walks which begin in early August and aim to help residents explore new places, get fit and meet new friends.
An online, digital version of the walks has also been made available for people who are not able or ready to venture outside their homes for group activities.
In Macclesfield, the walks on the programme are set on a section of the Macclesfield Canal in
Bollington and at a section next to Bosley Locks.
As well as the walks there are a number of activities across Cheshire, run by the Canal & Rivers Trust, to get people out and about this summer.
The in-person walks are in groups of 12 and at a slow and steady pace for beginners, no more than 40 minutes; while the online programme is suitable for anyone who has access to a computer.
The Bollington walk starts at Bridge 26A, Clarence Mill on Clarence Road and ends at Holehouse Lane Car Park, in Adlington.
At Bosley Lock the start and end point of the walk is the Bosley Locks boater’s facilities on Bullgate Lane. More information can be found at canalrivertrust.org.uk/ about-us/where-wework/north-west/ active-waterwayscheshire.
