Prestbury ace set to join pro ranks

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

PRESTBURY Golf Club and Cheshire County star James Newton is making a big move into professional ranks after qualifying for the 2021 Europro Tour.

James has been a regular for Cheshire Boys and Men’s teams for the past decade and has won the Boys and County Men’s Championships twice as well as plenty of other top competitions in the UK.

James played the first stage of the Europro qualifying school at Luton Hoo GC and shot -5, -3 for a total of -8 and came third to progress to final stage.

This was held at Studley Wood and The Oxfordshire golf clubs. The field was comprised of 192 players with the top 30 gaining their full cards for the 2021 season.

James had a three round total of -11 (-2, -5, -4) to finish 22nd and earned full playing rights for next year.

All the EuroPro events next year are covered by

Sky Sports and will be followed with interest and support for James for the many friends he has made at Prestbury and Cheshire over his great time in amateur golf.

The monthly Stableford at Shrigley Hall saw division one led in by Peter Slack after a cpo on 38 points with Graeme Nimmo, one more than Ian Wadsworth, Don Farquharson, Brian Hopkins and Sash Neerso.

In division two Joe Cassidy was out on his own with 38 points, two more than Ray Haddock, Martin Jackson and John Gaskell.

A singles Stableford at Mottram Hall was led in by David Simcock with a fine haul of 43 points taking him clear of Malcolm Hurrell 41 and David Laird 40.

Next day another Stableford at Mottram was won by Bob Kwan with 38 points from Paul Dunford 37 and Simon Poucher and Peter Smith, both 36.

The Sunday Stableford at Styal had Chris Harris in charge with 39 points from Matt Wilde 38 and

Andy Withington 36.

There was another fine entry of 126 players for the Balfour and Houldsworth Mixed Team competition for the GS Lancashire Trophy at Withington Golf Club.

This was twice the entry for the competition from 2019 when it was played for as a Team of Four competition for the first time and the host club put on a great show on and off the course to deal with the restrictions imposed by Covid 19.

The early scores were in the mid-70’s with the top one of 78 coming from Sale’s Mobi and Cath Rawthore and Steve

Rourke and thews.

Then later in the day it rose to 81 which proved to be the winning score from Greg Norbury (Flixton GC) , Judith Godley (Worsley GC) and Haley and Jeff Stokes (Flixton GC).

It was a memorable day for Greg who had won the trophy in 2017 when it was a pairs competition at Davyhulme Park with Carol Brady as his partner.

The Sale fab four stayed in second spot and there was a cpo on 77 from three teams to secure third spot and it went to Worsley Marriott’s Stephen Murray, Jean Kelly and Allan and Sue Rudman from Bury’s John and Christine Caveney and Kevin and Julie Sleigh.

This was another excellent competition organised by the B and H Committee who gave due praise and thanks to Withington for their excellent support and organisation both on and off the course.

The competition will be held at Leigh GC in 2021.
