SPECIAL-EDITION SAUSAGES ARE FLYING OFF THE SHELVES AT VILLAGE GROCERY STORE
VILLAGE grocer and newsagent with a love for sausages celebrated his 60th year working in the shop by creating a special edition banger.
Don Hoare, 75, said packets of Don’s Anniversary Sizzler have been a hit with residents of Billesdon.
The shopkeeper is renowned throughout the village for his local produce and larger-than-life character.
Don and his wife Sue, 74, have been running the shop in Market Place since 1976, but he bagan working there in 1962.
Don, who was born in the village, said: “My son and daughterin-law know I love sausages, and when we came up with the idea for my anniversary I asked one of our suppliers, who rear their own pigs and cattle.
“I gave them a recipe based on an Italian sausage I used to love years ago.
“It’s mainly fennel seeds and garlic but it’s delicious.
“We started selling them in the shop at the end of April and since then they’ve just been flying off the shelves.
“We can’t keep up to pace with them, everybody loves them.”
The sausages, which are exclusive to Don’s Shop, are produced by March House Farm Butchers, in Great Dalby.
His son Sam and his daughterin-law Sarah have taken to FaceA book to advertise the shopkeeper’s special sausages – and have even starting selling merchandise. T-shirts and polo shirts dedicated to Don’s 60th anniversary at the family-owned grocer can be bought online. Buyers receive a free pack of sausages with the order.
Don began working in the shop in at the age of 15 to help out his mum, who had owned it since 1958.
He said: “I have always loved sausages and I am so excited to be able to sell the anniversary sausage to celebrate my 60 years in the shop”.
