VAR introduced for Euro semi-finals as
UEFA have confirmed that VAR will be used in both legs of the Europa Conference League semi-final as Leicester City look to make further history in the competition.
Wins over Danish side Randers, French side Rennes and Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven have seen City make it to their first ever European semifinal.
A 2-1 away win over PSV earlier this month set up a semi-final clash vs Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
The Italian heavyweights visit the King Power Stadium tomorrow night with the return leg seeing City travel to Rome a week later.
The winners of the tie will face either Marseille or Feyenoord in the final of the competition in Tirana, Albania on May 25.
Unlike other UEFA competitions, the Video Assistant Referee has not been in operation so far in previous rounds of the Europa Conference League.
That is, however, now set to change this week.
It was originally planned that the system would be used just for the final in Albania.
But that plan has now been brought forward due to all stadiums being used in the semi-finals being able to use the system without any overhauls.
After speculation in Italy earlier this month, it has now been confirmed by UEFA that VAR will be used in both legs of the two semifinals.
In a statement, the governing body wrote: “UEFA has decided to introduce video assistant referees (VAR) for the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
“As already announced previously, the VAR system will also be used at the final in Tirana, Albania, on Wednesday, May 25.
“The possible deployment of VAR in prior stages of the competition next season is currently under assessment.”
