A GROUP set up to campaign for action to tackle climate change and promotoe sustainable lifestyles will be launched in Leek on Friday.

The Only One World Club will come into existence at Haregate Community Centre in Queens Drive, Leek at a special launch event starting at 6pm.

The launch event will see a panel of experts – including former Stoke-ontrent North MP Joan Walley, chair of the Aldersgate Group which advocates the business case for decarbonising the UK economy, improving resource efficiency and investing in the natural environment. And representatives from organisations including Friends of the Earth and the Staffordshire Climate Action community – discuss the current climate emergency and steps that need to be taken to deal with it.

The new group is being promotoed by the Leek-based Peace Through Folk Trust.

Trust spokesman Malcolm Hawksworth said: “People have begun to realise that unless they change the way they live, very soon this fragile planet will no longer be able to sustain life and mankind will become extinct. “Once it’s gone, it’s gone, and there is no Planet Earth B for future generations of our children and grandchildren to exist on, let alone enjoy.”

“Our panel of experts will assist in the discovery and sharing of knowledge and individual practical ways that everyone can lessen their impact on the climate and live a lifestyle that the earth can sustain.

“Everyone who asks themselves the question ‘what can I do to help save our planet?’ will be welcome.” Malcolm said the group believed that the Climate Emergency was now very real but that people should not give in to despair.

He said: “Scientists have come up with the answers and there is still time to fix things. World leaders, governments and councils are adopting policies to address the key issues at a global and regional level but at the same time every one of us can each do our bit.

“Taking incremental action at a personal level will help mankind become strong and committed.”

The panel debate will be followed by an evening of lively discussion and sharing of ideas, songs and music.

Malcolm added: “The power of song and all other forms of culture has a huge role to play in galvanising people to act positively while keeping strong as they face this single most significant challenge ever to the human race.”

Music will be provided by Val Williamson, Rick Ford, Black Death and others.

Admission to Friday evening’s event is free – donations welcome – and there is no pay bar so all are encouraged to bring food and drink.
