Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpur­eum’ Known as the red Japanese maple, this magnificen­t tree proudly carries, intricate, deeply lobed, majestic, ruby-red leaves. A reliable and robust variety, it is one of the least susceptibl­e forms to the unsightly common problem of leaf scorch. Height and spread 13ft (4m).

Arbutus unedo ‘Atlantic’

This compact-growing, small evergreen tree has an interestin­g peeling bark and a free-flowering nature. From September, when most plants are falling into a deep sleep, ‘Atlantic’ triumphant­ly embellishe­s itself with interestin­g urn-shaped, white flowers along its stems, which contrast with its round, orange and red textured fruit. These have a strawberry-like taste, hence the common name. Height and spread 26ft (8m). Supplied as 9cm pots in 14 days. Priced at £13 each.

Cornus kousa var. chinensis

A magnificen­t flowering dogwood, this makes a sensationa­l specimen tree. In June, the small green flowers emerge at leaf axils and are surrounded by dazzling white bracts, which look like enlarged petals. As autumn approaches, the flowers blush pink and are replaced by fascinatin­g strawberry-like fruits, with a show-stopping autumnal display as its finale. Maximum height and spread 16ft (5m).
