Town end losing run in style

-

Faversham came from behind to record a priceless win at local rivals Whitstable on Saturday.

Badly needing points to drag themselves away from relegation trouble in Bostik South East, the Lilywhites had lost four on the spin before arriving at the Belmont.

But they dug deep to climb off the foot of the table, extending the Oystermen’s winless streak to five matches in the process.

Whitstable went desperately close when Steve Smith got in down the right and hooked a clever shot over Will Godmon, only to see the ball bounce on the line and strike the far post.

But the clearance only reached Jordan Wright, who swivelled and sent a dipping half-volley into the net from outside the box.

Faversham looked to respond and Liam King had a snapshot pushed out by Dan Eason, who then grabbed the rebound.

The visitors did equalise midway through the first half, King showing a good burst of speed down the right and whipping in an excellent cross which Ashley Miller converted on the volley.

George Monger lashed a shot over moments later and Danny Walder bent a free-kick narrowly wide after Miller had been crudely up-ended by Michael Jenner.

A long ball forward almost saw Whitstable re-take the lead at the other end but Smith, on the stretch, shot just wide.

Wright missed a great chance to double his tally, firing wastefully over and the home side were made to pay on the stroke of half-time.

A pass meant for Miller bounced off Rob Gillman and ran nicely for Cook, who sent a first-time finish low past Eason’s left hand.

Eason saved from Cook three times after the break as Faversham went in search of a third goal while Ricky Freeman should have done better with a tame effort straight at Godmon.

But the visitors looked the more likely scorers in the closing stages, with Ben Chapman sending a free-kick over the bar.
