Harrison enjoys hot streak
Golf round-up
Liz Harrison won her second trophy at Broome Park Golf Club in as many weekswhen she triumphed at the annual club championship.
Harrison was the clubhouse leader at the midway point of the two-day event after a first round net score of 73, and she kept her nerve to card the same score on the Sunday to lift the Broome Park Trophy with an aggregate score of 146.
There was more silverware for Harrison as she received the club championship for the lowest gross score of 178.
Nieves Clarke came through the field on the final day to finish second with a 150 aggregate, just ahead of ladies’ captain Betty Martin, who finished third on 153.
The men’s championship was also tightly fought but Dick Fuller was the winner with his aggregate score of 139.
His closest challengers were Craig Benneyworth (144) and J Scorer ( 145) who finished second and third respectively.
However, the John Downs Salver Trophy was awarded to James Morris, who has a handicap of five and recorded the lowest gross total with 135.
The team of Roz Bacon, Sandy Greenhill and Jan Mackay from Etchinghill were victorious at The winners of Broome Park’s Silver Pheasants Trophy, Steve Mummery, Liz Harrision and club captain Alan Goggin the Broome Park Ladies’ Open.
The competition’s format was Texas Scramble and the champions carded a net 64, which was just enough to make them champions.
Kay Barnard, Gay Watkins and Chris Dunlop from Chestfield were runners- up after a countback as they and the thirdplaced team, consisting of Debbie Gorin, Tina Earley and Margaret Jeffs, both finished on 65.
There had been more success a week earlier for Liz Harrison, who, partnered by Steve Mummery, was the winner of the Mixed Foursome Medal at Broome Park.
Their net 71.5 was enough to beat runners-up, Vic and Sylvia Beecham, who finished on net 74.
They were awarded Silver Pheasants for winning the competition, a trophy that was donated to the club by founding members John and Betty Martin back in the 1980s.
A countback was required to determine the winner of the monthly medal at Faversham Golf Club.
The final result provided victory for Huss Bakir, with a net 66 off a handicap of 13. Brett Chidgey (h6) was runner-up with net 66.
Matt Godden and Michael James were victors in the club pairs tournament that was also held, finishing with 44 points.
Former European Tour professional Warren Bennett is among the starters in Open Regional Qualifying at Wildernesse Golf Club in Sevenoaks on Monday.
The 43-year-old, now a member at Chestfield, who retired in 2009 following a hand injury, finished tied-40th, his best-ever performance in the 1995 Open, at St Andrews – venue for this year’s championships next month (July 16-19).
He tees off at lunchtime with playing partners Jonathan Day (The Essex GC) and George Mullins from Langley Park.
Canterbury amateur Joshua Bristow is in the following group with Matthew Sheehan from Princes and Thordur Gissurarson from Iceland.
