An Ashford B&Q employee went the extra mile for two elderly customers after walking a trolley full of compost and plants all the way to their home.

Ed Stubbs, 26, delivered the heavy goods from the store on Gallagher Retail Park right to his customers’ front door so they didn’t have to carry their purchases on the bus.

He was pictured with the trolley in Beaver Road, nearly half a mile from the store.

A photo of the unusual scene was posted on the Spotted In Ashford Facebook page, with the caption ‘Now this is customer service... or a very clever daylight robbery made to look like it?’

But it was in fact customer service at its finest, as Mr Stubbs had offered to make the journey when he heard they didn’t have a car.

He wrote on the original Facebook page: “I’d been helping them around the store.

“One of the men had a mobility scooter and planned to load the bags on to it. But there was no way it would all fit, and they were talking about having to get a bus. They didn’t have a car and the other gentleman had a walking stick.

“I was more than happy to help and they were really grateful. I often help people carry stuff out to their car but this was a first.

“I got some funny looks along the way but I really didn’t mind.

“We always help our customers as much as we can and I really don’t think they would have been able to get back on their own.”

The picture has gone viral, receiving national and international attention but Mr Stubbs, who lives in Hythe, said he was just doing his job.

He told the Daily Express: “When I got home I was a bit surprised to find a picture of myself online. As far as I was concerned I was just doing my job. I couldn’t believe there were so many really Residents have been quick to praise the B&Q worker on social media, particularly the Spotted In Ashford Facebook page, for his exemplary customer service skills. A B&Q spokeswoman added: “Our staff always try to help as much as they can, but it is great to see that Ed literally went the extra mile on this occasion to make sure these two customers were able to get home safely.”
