Ideal day for a race or two

Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club held their Autumn Small Boats Head on Sunday.

The weather was kind for the first time in three races with 142 crews completing the 2.5km course from Allington Marina to Maidstone town centre.

Clubs attending included local rivals from King’s School, Canterbury, King’s School, Rochester, Bewl Bridge, Medway Towns and Gravesend Rowing Clubs, as well as competitor­s from further afield such as Tyne and Surbiton High School.

The event had joint overall time winners with Maidstone’s open four and the King’s Canterbury four recording 8min50sec, winning the fastest men’s and junior men’s pennants respective­ly.

The Maidstone four were made up of Jon Mihr, Jamie Waterhouse, Elliot Green, Tom Long and cox Emma Moss. MIRC chairman Richard Huggins said: “The event ran on time, there were no capsizes, no collisions, the barbecue sold out and everyone enjoyed themselves. That’s what I call a successful event.”

Other Maidstone winners were: Men’s J15 quad (Connor Beattie, Alex Knight, Scott Bain, Will Dixon, cox Luke Lillis) 9.17; Men’s J18 double (Oliver Hill, Brendan Pyke) 9.33; Men’s masters E/F quad (Richard Huggins, Geraint Evans, Oliver Barton, Robin Chapman, cox Dani James) 9.34; Men’s open single (Jon Mihr) 9.49; Men’s J15 single (Scott Bain) 9.55; Women’s J18 four (Megan Palmer, Abby Chapman, Tamara Tymczyszyn, Maria Bragin, cox Daisy Howarth) 9.56; Men’s J15 double (Alex Knight, Connor Beattie) 10.01; Women’s open four (Emma Doyle, Baye Drury, Cassandra Gilbert Ward, Mary Spence, cox Sam Gilbert Ward) 10.05; Women’s open double (Flora O’Brien, Olivia Naylor) 10.11; Men’s masters G double (Ray Phillips, Robin Chapman) 10.19; Women’s J18 single (Tamara Tymczyszyn) 10.40; Men’s J17 single (Aaron Horlock) 10.43; Men’s masters E/F single (Clive Harlow) 10.53; Women’s J16 four (Keri Powell, Olivia Harrison, Niamh Murphy, Phoebe Willis, cox Ella Chapman) 11.19; Women’s open single (Sarah Houghton) 11.52.
