PRAISE BE!

TOM BRITTNEY IS BACK IN THE DOG COLLAR…

-

Rev Will Davenport had a bumpy landing as Grantchester’s new vicar last year – not only did he have to win over his new parishioners and indomitable housekeeper Mrs C, but he also had a major falling-out with curate Leonard that ended up with Will punching him! Thankfully, the two have made peace, and Will’s now settled in his new role – which, of course, includes helping DI Geordie Keating investigate crimes. We caught up with Tom Brittney, who plays Will, to find out what lies ahead…

How was it taking over from James Norton last year?

The fear was before I had met everyone, but they made me feel so at home that the nerves just went. The only time I was nervous was doing my first sermon, but I channelled that into the character because he was worried about pleasing everyone, so once I’d got that out of the way it felt better.

We hear there might be some romance for Will this series…

It looks like it’s going that way! There’s a new character, a journalist called Ellie, played by Lauren Carse. She has known Geordie for a while and seems to have an ‘in’ with the police. Will meets her and has a problem, morally, with the way she tries to get information. But then he starts to see a different side to her, so I think something will happen there…

We’ve seen Will’s difficult relationship with his family – how’s he getting on?

His mum has moved into a Chelsea apartment after having to get rid of the estate, and there are issues. Her life has been completely uprooted from what it was: she’s lost her husband, and she’s trying to come to terms with her new life. Will’s trying to make her

happy, but he doesn’t always go about it the right way.

And are things more settled at the vicarage now?

Leonard is trying to mend his relationship with Mrs C after what happened last series – he’s continuing his relationship with Daniel without her finding out, and Will helps them. He just wants everyone to be happy!
