Met Office issues yellow weather warning for rain with flooding possible

-

HEAVY rain in Hull and East Yorkshire could lead to power cuts, flooding, road closures and disruption, the Met Office has warned.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place from 3pm today until 9am on Tuesday morning. Up to 40mm of rain could fall in just two hours, leading to a sharply increased risk of flooding.

Explaining what might go wrong, the Met Office said there was a “slight chance” of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses. It also said some properties could be flooded which would cause severe damage.

It also said to watch out for difficult driving conditions, road closures, and delays and cancellations to train and bus services. Announcing the weather warning on its website, The Met Office said: “Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times with a risk of thunder, are expected to develop later on Monday afternoon then move northwards through the evening and overnight.

“Fifteen to 20 mm rain may fall in less than an hour, with a few places seeing up to 40 mm in two hours but perhaps more widely within a longer period overnight.

“Where this occurs, there is the chance of some flooding and disruption.”

The Environment Agency has not yet released any warnings or alerts for Hull or the wider East Yorkshire area.

But people concerned about the risk of flooding should keep checking the website for updates or sign up for free alerts to their email address or mobile number.

In Hull, light rain is forecast to begin at around 7pm tonight. It will steadily increase in intensity and reach its peak at 2am on Tuesday with very heavy rain until 9am.

Fortunately, Wednesday is forecast to be sunny and around 22C. Thursday will be quite cloudy but still be warm. Friday will be sunny and 23C and Saturday and Sunday will have mixed patches of sunshine and cloud, reaching a maximum temperature of 21C.

On average, Hull has about 10 days of rain in July, according to the Met Office. The average high temperature for July is 22C and the minimum is a chilly 13C.
