£1.7m to fund music lessons

-

HULL City Council is set to receive £1.7m for music lessons and instruments as part of a shake-up which will see its services become a hub for the Humber.

Hull City Council’s Music Service will take the lead in the region’s new Humber Music Hub which is set to be launched in September. The move is set to see services awarded £1.3m in Government funding for music education in the area and £400,000 for new instruments.

Hull Music Service head James Dickinson said the hub aimed to deliver a broad and diverse range of high-quality lessons and education for children and young people.

The restructure of local services into regional hubs comes as part of Government efforts to promote musical education for young people. Music hubs aim to provide opportunities for children and young people to learn instruments, sing on their own or in groups, join orchestras, bands or choirs and learn outside school.

They are part of national aims to give all children the opportunity to sing and play instruments and get professional help to allow them to progress in their musical education.

The Arts Council England’s awarding of hub status to Hull’s Music Services means it will lead the delivery of education for the

East Riding, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. Music Service Head Mr Dickinson said they were delighted that their bid had been successful. Mr Dickinson said: “This is an endorsement of the huge amount of high-quality provision that already exists in the region, as well as the expertise of our respective workforces.”

Arts Council England’s chief executive Darren Henley said the music hubs would support the brilliant work of dedicated music teachers across the country.
