Kesler: Tom was such a class act

HULL City vice-chairman Tan Kesler praised striker Tom Eaves for his professionalism after learning that he would not see his contract at the MKM Stadium, extended beyond the end of next month.

Eaves was one of three players released by the Tigers last week, joining skipper Richie Smallwood and Tom Huddlestone in not having their option years activated by the Championship club.

His impending departure brings an end to his three-year stay at City, following a 2019 move from Gillingham.

City expect to be busy in the transfer market this summer as Shota Arveladze looks to build a squad he feels is capable of challenging in the top half of the table next season, and adding quality striking options is top of the agenda after the struggles of this season to find the net with any degree of regularity.

The Tigers managed just 41 goals in their 46 Championship games this season, a total which was only topped by relegated Barnsey’s 33.

Eaves contributed five to that tally, though his header against Blackburn Rovers in Acun Ilicali’s first game as owner will long live in the memory of City fans.

“When I spoke with Tom, he was such a class act,” Kesler said. “He actually was very realistic when we spoke, he said ‘Tan, I don’t want to be the second or the third option, so thanks for your honesty and I’ll move on.’

“In his case, I really have to give special thanks to him for having such a realistic perspective, and looking at us as we’re trying to improve the team and bring people in that will be in front of him.

“He looked at it on a more holistic basis and I appreciated that, so that’s why I called him a class act.

“I wish him the best and we’ll always remain in touch. He’ll always be welcome and part of our legacy.”
