One-star takeaway is told to clean up its act

A COUNCIL inspector who visited a Huddersfield village takeaway found the hot water was not working and staff were not washing their hands regularly.

The Kirklees Council inspector found a number of issues at New Paradise, an Indian takeaway in Highgate Lane, Lepton, during a visit in February.

Staff were unable to wash their hands and equipment properly due to boiler issues and staff were found not to be washing their hands regularly.

The takeaway was told to “boil hot water for cleaning in the meantime.”

Kirklees Council has provided a copy of the food hygiene report following a Freedom of Information Act request.

The inspector found that the takeaway’s SFBB pack – Safer Food, Better Business – was not complete and staff were not trained in its use.

The inspector also found issues with the personal hygiene of staff, writing: “At the time of my visit, one member of staff was chewing gum and the other who had long hair and did not have it tied back. Train and enforce good personal hygiene to prevent cross contamination.”

The floor and the floor-wall junctions were found to be dirty, especially under the sinks. The takeaway was told to clean these areas and maintain them in a clean condition.

Two microwaves were found on site, with one not working while the other had rusted. The business was told to replace the microwaves.

‘Touch points’ in the business were said to be dirty, and the back yard was cluttered. The inspector advised the business to remove all waste to prevent pests. A fridge seal was found to be damaged and the fridge was dirty inside and out.

Some of the issues required immediate rectification, according to the inspection report dated February 7. The inspector returned a week later and rated the takeaway one star, noting: “Following the contraventions highlighted at the initial inspection, the following rating has been given. On our revisit, hot water was available and you had started to complete your SFBB pack.”

A one star hygiene rating means that ‘major improvement’ is needed.
