A PENSIONER in his 70s died following a collision on a major A-road on the outskirts of Kirklees, West Yorkshire Police has confirmed.

The tragedy came just a few hours after another man in his 70s suffered a serious head injury less than a mile down the same road.

Officers and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were called to the A629 Penistone Road at Birdsedge at 4.45pm to reports of a two vehicle collision.

They believe the driver of a Mazda 6 car - a 74-year-old man - had a medical episode at the wheel.

His vehicle was in collision at low speed with another vehicle close to Birdsedge school.

The 74-year-old died at the scene. No one else was injured.

Police sealed off the road until 8.30pm to investigate the incident.

They are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the Mazda 6 driving on the A629 prior to the collision and particularly any witnesses with dashcam footage.

Information can be given via 101 or the online options at www. westyorkshire.police.uk/contactus, quoting log 1249 of September 8.

The incident was the third of the day in the Denby Dale area.

Earlier on Tuesday, a man in his 70s was seriously hurt after falling from his bike near the notorious Sovereign Crossroads.

The 73-year-old came off his bicycle at about 10.15am at Lane Head Road near Shepley and suffered a serious head injury. He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where he is undergoing treatment.

Any witnesses or anyone who may have seen the cyclist immediately prior to the incident is asked to contact the non-emergency number 101 or use the live chat facility available via the Force website.

Meanwhile, locals have also reported a car collided with the back of an HGV shortly after the cyclist incident.
