Man who assaulted police officers among cases heard by magistrate­s

DOZENS of criminals are dealt with by magistrate­s at Kirklees every day.

Magistrate­s have the powers to jail defendants for up to six months for one offence or 12 months in total for a number of offences.

They can also hand down fines of up to £5,000.

All magistrate­s are unpaid volunteers and they only receive expenses for the work they do.

With more serious offences they will send a defendant to crown court for sentencing.

Here are the latest cases from the courts. by failing to attend induction appointmen­t on November

12, 2019. Ordered to pay £50 costs.

■■Quasim Ali, 35, Pately Crescent, Fartown. Misusing a disabled parking badge on Albion Street on May 17, 2019. Fined £93, £30 surcharge, £250 costs.

■■John Gregory Cropper, 62, Midgley Farm, Wickens Lane, Holfirth. Extended and made alteration­s to a listed building between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008 and demolished a listed building without planning permission between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018. Fined £1,500, £150 surcharge and £1,448.33 costs.

■■Lee Astin, 40, Winton Street, Lockwood. Handling of stolen goods, namely a bank card, and fraudulent­ly used someone’s bank card to try and buy tobacco and a drink on Upper Clough Road on November 27, 2019 and stole hair clippers, cigarettes and glasses worth an unknown value and interfered with a vehicle intending to steal property and stole a bank card in Holmfirth on December 25, 2019. Jailed for 30 weeks concurrent and ordered to pay a £149 surcharge.

■■Paul Darren Flynn, 33, Maple Avenue, Golcar. Damaged a window to the value of £200 and assaulted two police officers, damaged glasses worth £100 on Lockwood Road, Lockwood and assaulted two people in the Yorkshire Victoria Pub, Lockwood Road, Lockwood on December 24, 2019.

■■Luke Steven Greenwood,

27, No fixed address. Used threatenin­g or abusive words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour and the offence was racially aggravated in Huddersfie­ld on May 10, 2019. Fined £12 and a £30.03 surcharge.

■■Lewis Carlton Shaw, 26, Whitehall Road. Made indecent images of a child namely, four category B and eight category C in Huddersfie­ld on August 15, 2018. Community order made for programme requiremen­t for 27 days, rehabilita­tion activity requiremen­t for 30 days, £85 surcharge, £85 costs, sexual offences prevention order made and ordered to sign the sex offenders register for five years.

■■Daljit Singh, 26, Foxcroft Drive, Brighouse. Failed to give informatio­n relating to the identifica­tion of a driver suspected of committing an offence in Bradford on July 23, 2018. Fined £300, £30 surcharge, £620 costs and

■■Mark Edward McSherry, 27, Cross Lane, Primrose Hill, Huddersfie­ld. Used threatenin­g, abusive or insulting words or behaviour in Huddersfie­ld on November 24. £230 fine, £32 surcharge and £28 costs.

■■Joseph Shiel, 35, New Road, Kirkheaton, Huddersfie­ld. Drunk and disorderly in a public place and assaulting a police officer in Huddersfie­ld on November 23. £150 fine, £50 compensati­on and £85 costs. ■■Benjamin Paul Sykes, 27, Moorside Road, Kirkheaton, Huddersfie­ld. Used threatenin­g, abusive or insulting words or behaviour in Huddersfie­ld on November 24. £347 fine, £34 surcharge and £28 costs.
