MARIE NICHOLSON and Hazel Rangeley from Meltham won the Huddersfield Ladies Afternoon League Pick Your Own Partner final at Moldgreen Con.

In the final they defeated Elaine Bell and Jean Graham of New Mill 21-18.

They came through their semifinal 21-10 against Sheila Westgarth and Sue Hallas of Brockholes, while the New Mill pairing had a closer contest against Jean Brook and Gill Todd of Golcar Lib, winning 21-19.

In the final, Nicholson and Rangeley went 5-0 ahead but they were soon pulled back to seven across.

The New Mill pairing then briefly held the lead, but a run of eight took the Meltham duo to a 17-10 advantage.

They then progressed to a 20-13 lead, but the New Mill bowlers responded with a run of five to crank up the pressure before Nicholson and Rangeley ran out for the title.

The lady bowlers at Moldgreen Con were thanked for their hospitality. Due to a lack of entries for the Drawn Doubles, this will now be played as a one-day competition on Wednesday, September 13.

The event will be at Crosland Moor BC and the draw will be made on the day.

As a result, August 23 is now free for anyone who has re-arranged games to play. THERE is £560 up for grabs in the Liberal Merit final, sponsored and hosted by Golcar Lib on Sunday.

It’s a 2pm start, 2.15 scratch, and defending champion Danny Bousfield from Lindley Lib will be hoping to go home with the £200 winner’s cheque once again.

Bousfield plays Almondbury Lib man Jamie Shaw in his first-round match.

However, the field also includes Huddersfield Merit winner Mark Atkinson of Crosland Moor, who took the Lib title in 2013 and 2014, plus several other major winners.

Atkinson’s first-round opponent is Yorkshire County player Dave Fox, so it should be an intriguing encounter.

Almondbury Lib’s Andrew Heaume will be trying to add to his 2015 merit title, after coming runner-up to Bousfield last year.

The runner-up will receive £100 and there’s £50 each for the losing players in the last four.

Commemorative medals will be presented to the semi-finalists and finalists. Dress code applies and there will be a raffle on the day.

Draw: Liam Fallas (Milnsbridge Lib) v Peter Swinden (Meltham Lib), Robert Senior (Lindley Lib) v Robert Taylor (Linthwaite CBC), David Fox (Kirkheaton Con) v Mark Atkinson (Crosland Moor), Jamie Shaw (Almondbury Lib) v Danny Bousfield (Lindley Lib), Billy Reynolds (Milnsbridge Lib) v Courtney Allert (Almondbury Lib), Paul Toon (Kirkheaton CBC) v Kris Lunn (Primrose Hill), Andrew Rose (Linthwaite CBC) v Andrew Heaume (Almondbury Lib), Steve Lunn (Primrose Hill) v Mick Armitage (Linthwaite CBC).
