Gill nets victory in latest round of evening league

- ANGLING

LAST TUESDAY saw Shackerstone AC stage round 2 of their Rising Sun sponsored Members Evening League fished on the Hags Lane section of the Ashby canal.

High winds once again made life somewhat difficult and as air temperatures change the fish were quite unresponsive. The winner of this round on peg 8 was Dave Gill who fed and fished bread to the far ledge. His reward was two nice bream around the 1.5lbs mark plus some reasonable skimmers to end the match with 6lbs 4ozs and 10 points.

Second place went to Geoff Taylor on peg 1 who unlike some, had to sit very patiently throughout the match hoping for a bite. As time marched on, he got his wish but what a magnificent fish - after a short scrap his worm bait fished down the track resulted in a bream weighing 3lbs 13.5ozs and that was his night to end with 9 points.

Third place was taken by Andy Morton on peg 12 who fed and fished bread to the far ledge like the winner. He too managed one good bream plus some skimmers and small rudd to end with 3lbs 9ozs and 8 points. After two rounds there is a three way tie for first place on 16 points between Gill, Morton & Phil Baker.

Sunday then saw Shackerstone AC stage their Members Richardson Cup fished on the Poplars section of the Ashby canal where competitors had bright but breezy conditions and fish did feed in some areas and there were reports of decent fish being lost which would turn out costly for some.

The winner on peg 8 was Glenn Morris who fed and fished bread under his feet early on before switching to the far ledge. He managed two decent skimmers on punch at 3 metres but then had to switch to the far side. That resulted in a few more skimmers and small roach and rudd to end with 3lbs 4ozs.

Second place on peg 5 was taken by the unlucky Kev Milne who fed and fished worm down the track after his other swims were empty. His first fish half way through the match was a decent zander around the 2.5lbs mark shortly followed by a decent skimmer. As the end of the match neared & with minutes to go, he somehow managed to lose a big bream at the net, costing him dearly as he ended with a level 3lbs.

Third place went to Steve Kind on peg 2 who fed and fished worm and maggot down the track. That resulted in one decent perch around the 1lb mark but thereafter he had to scratch around on pinkie for small fish, mainly rudd and perch to end with 2.5lbs.

Wednesday saw Measham AC stage round 2 of their Club sponsored Midweek League fished on the Ash tree section of the Ashby canal and once again, the fish were hard to find and for this time of year, the weights were surprisingly low. The winner on peg 29 was Ashby angler Ian Plant who fed and fished his favoured bread to the far shelf and worm down the track. He managed one decent skimmer around the 1lb mark on bread but that was a shoal of one. Thereafter he had to scratch about for whatever he could, mainly small perch, skimmers and rudd to end with just 2.5lbs but 25 valuable points.

Second place went to Measham angler Nish Padamsay on peg 19 who fed and fished bread to the far side and maggot and worm down the track. He also managed a decent skimmer or two but then had to resort to chopping & changing baits for small rudd and perch to end his night just short of the winner with 2lbs 5ozs and 24 points.

Third for this round went to Nuneaton angler Glenn Morris on peg 20 who also had to chop and change baits between bread, worm and maggot in the hope of snaring whatever might be there. He managed small perch, skimmers, roach and rudd to end with 1lb 9.75ozs and 18 points.

The section winners were - pegs 19-25, Tamworth angler Jamie South on peg 21 with 1lb 7ozs of small skimmers and perch for 16 points and pegs 26-33, Tamworth angler Darren Massey on peg 26 with 1.5lbs of small roach and rudd for 17 points. After two rounds the top 3 anglers are Massey with 42 points, Padamsay with 41 and John Wainwright with 38 points”.

Sunday will see Measham AC stage the Walters Shield Open match, draw 7.45am at the Globe, Snarestone.
