Bike thefts prompt security call

-

CYCLISTS are calling for greater security measures at Hinckley train station’s bike racks following a series of thefts.

Stacey Bruce said her teenage son had bought himself a new mountain bike for £250 with money he received at Christmas.

The 13-year-old locked the bike securely in one of the bike sheds at the train station as he visited Leicester for a spot of shopping on January 28.

But when he returned at 5.30pm his bike had been stolen.

Mr Bruce, 36, from Hinckley, said: “We told the police about it and they said it happens all the time.

“There’s nothing they can do really, they can’t man the bike racks all day and night.

“But people need to be made aware that the bike racks aren’t secure and extra CCTV needs to be installed as a deterrent.

“£250 is a lot of money and we’ll have to replace the bike now thanks to the little scallywags.”

Leicestershire Police said it was aware of the theft and enquiries are ongoing.

The bike is a silver or grey Carrera HellCat brand.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council said the bike shelters were installed by the council at the request of Network Rail, but any additional security measures would the responsibilty of the train company.

A spokesman said there’s clear warning signs on the platform advising people that bikes are left at the owners risk and the council accepts no responsibilty for damage of theft.
