Women rally for This Girl Can campaign

-

MORE than 30 women and girls took part in free squash sessions at a Hinckley club as part of the national This Girl Can campaign.

The event, hosted by Hinckley Squash and Racketball Club, saw people aged from seven to 65 take part in a series of games with the help of former world number 11 and England international, Sarah-Jane Perry.

Cath Brown, member development officer at the club, said the day was a “great success” and all participants were interested in playing again.

She added: “I’m over the moon with the success of the Squash Girls Can Event.

“I’m fortunate my parents encouraged me to participate in sport from a very young age and I have enjoyed doing sport ever since, but for many women and girls participation in sport can be a very daunting thing.

“So to see more than 30 women and girls, most of whom have never played squash before, come and try something completely new is extremely encouraging.”

The event was organised with the support of Leicestershire and Rutland Sport and England Squash.

Women are invited to take part in female-only squash lessons from February 16 to March 30.

The sessions run every Thursday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Maple Drive centre and all equipment will be provided.

The seven week course costs £15 or £4 for pay as you go.
