Could you be a master composter?

-

KEEN composters are being urged to get in touch with Leicestershire County Council as they search for 20 volunteers to spread the word.

The county council is looking for 20 new volunteers to become master composters and to help raise awareness about the importance of composting.

Those benefits include helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. Composting can also save money and improve soil fertility.

The master composters also encourage more people to compost at home. Free training is provided, and the next training session will take place on Saturday March 11 and Sunday March 12 at Ryton Organic Gardens, Coventry.

The initiative is run by the county council’s waste management team in con- junction with the Leicestershire Waste Partnership and charity Garden Organic.

Councillor Blake Pain, the county council’s cabinet member for waste, said: “We know Leicestershire residents want to do their bit for the environment and volunteering as a master composter also has huge benefits in bringing together the community.”

There are currently 45 master composters across the county and the scheme is open to residents of Leicestershire (excluding Leicester city) and volunteers must be over 18.
