Hundreds sign ‘save our hospital’ petition
CAMPAIGNERS determined to save Hinckley and District Hospital from closure gained more than 900 signatures on a protest petition in just one day.
The group, led by Lynda Gibbs, manned a stall in Hinckley town centre showcasing all the positives of the Mount Road facility.
Passers-by reacted favourably with 990 people putting pen to paper.
Lynda said: “I have been overwhelmed by the massive response and touched by the genuine interest and lovely messages of encouragement that have been given to myself and the team.
“On the day a total of 990 signatures were collected. Added to that figure is 180 that came back to me last week. That makes a total of 1,170. Add that to the present total on the 38 Degrees online petition and we have the grand running total of 4,892. That is an amazing achievement in approximately seven weeks. Thank-you to all who have signed.”
A number of people joined in to help on the stall including local councillors Jan Kirby and Michael Mullaney.
Michael said: “The response from residents was stunning, nearly 1,000 more people signing the petition on the day. There is a clear, massive head of steam behind the campaign to keep Mount Road Hospital and I hope the CCG will listen to local residents. Our growing area needs improved, not reduced NHS services, in particular a walk-in-centre or minor injuries unit in the centre of Hinckley.”
Many people joined in the spirit of celebration either dressing up or bringing mementoes of why they have had cause to be grateful to the hospital.
The campaigners’ next event is on Friday July 1 from 7pm to 9pm at the Greyhound Pub.
