Blantyre Vics kids are on the ball with charity work

- LEONA GREENAN

Blantyre Vics Football Club’s 2007 whites chose a novel way to raise money for their new kits.

The boys, who play in the Lanarkshire Football District Association (LFDA) on a Sunday morning, decided to partake in a ‘last man standing’ competition.

For this they asked family and friends to pick a team from the Premier League each week, and if that team lost or drew you were ruled out. However, if that team won, competitors would go through to the following week.

Over 60 people entered the competition, paying a small fee to take part, until there was only one person left, who then took home half of the proceeds.

The other half were kept by the football team towards the purchase of their new kit.

Club coach Simon Pettigrew told the Advertiser: “The last man standing competition was a fun way to raise money and include the boys’ families and friends.

“Because we raised the money by ourselves we then decided that we didn’t require a commercial sponsor, and thought it would be a nice idea to approach a local charity.

“After a few discussions we decided upon The Haven in Blantyre and Scott Cunningham MBE and the team were delighted to come on board.”

The Haven is a charity with centres in Blantyre, Forth and Wishaw, who provide free support to those with life-limiting illnesses such as well as their families.

Scott Cunningham, Haven fundraising officer, commented: “I would like to thank the club for kindly choosing The Haven as their shirt sponsor for this season. It is a fantastic gesture and will help promote the name of The Haven to the wider community wherever the lads are playing their matches. It was tremendous to have the chance to meet the team and the coaches recently and pass on best wishes from everyone at The Haven for the season ahead.”

The Haven Centres are open are open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Anyone wishing further information on the services they offer or about fundraising, please telephone the fundraising team on 01698 727505 or email events@ thehavencentre.com or visit www. thehavencentre.com to find out more.
