In memory of tragic Jo
Great Get Together
An event to mark the birthday of murdered MP Jo Cox was held at Gilmour and Whitehill Parish Church at the weekend.
The day was hosted by Labour politicians Monica Lennon MSP and Ged Killen MP as part of the Great Get Together events being held throughout the UK.
The first Great Get Together was held last year on the anniversary of Labour MP Ms Cox’s murder. This year, her family decided to move the celebrations to the weekend of what would have been her 44th birthday.
Ms Lennon and Mr Killen decided to take part by hosting their own community event in Jo’s memory.
Ms Lennon, Central Scotland MSP and Scottish Labour shadow communities spokesperson, said: “It was lovely to mark the Great Get Together with my colleague Ged Killen MP at our public event in Whitehill and Gilmour Parish Church, who were fantastic hosts.
“These events are about bringing people together, to celebrate Jo’s life and all that she stood for. Jo was a Labour MP who was simply going about her constituency duties, as Ged and I often do, by holding a public advice surgery when her life was tragically taken.
“I’m proud to have played a small part of the Great Get Together this year and I hope that it continues to grow from strength to strength.”
Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP Mr Killen: “Thank you to everyone who came along to Great Get Together that Monica and I arranged on Saturday to bring together the community and celebrate Jo Cox MP’S life.
“I wasn’t lucky enough to meet Jo myself but I am reminded every time I am in the chamber in Westminster by the plaque on the wall of what Jo stood for and the amazing work she did.
“It is fitting that we remember Jo by bringing the community together as these days it is easy to live our lives in isolation. I would like to say a big thank you to the church for hosting us and also a thank you to all the businesses and people who kindly donated on the day.”
