Bothwell cyclist pedals for charity

-

A Bothwell man has raised more than £1000 by taking part in a 100-mile cycle event.

Ray Peckett took part in the London Ride 100 to raise £1072 for the NSPCC.

The event involves up to 25,000 cyclists following the route raced at the London 2012 Olympics across London and Surrey.

The 47-year-old said:“i have been staggered by my friends’generosity.

“The thought of their donations and how the money would help children really spurred me on when I was struggling at times during the ride.

“Along with the birth of my children Jack and Jenna, and the day I married the love of my life Trace Peckett, I can honestly say crossing the finishing line at The Mall was one of the best and most rewarding moments in my lifetime.

“The support from the crowds around the course for me and NSPCC was amazing, truly inspiring and helped during the tough times.”ray, originally from Croydon, works as a business development manager in the soft drinks industry.

He decided to take on the challenge after getting into cycling last year to improve his fitness.

To prepare he had been cycling 30 to 80 miles every few days across the central belt of Scotland.

He picked the NSPCC as his wife Trace’s position is on its Glasgow board of fundraising.

Ray added:“the last few miles were incredible, crowds shouting encouragement, stewards willing us on telling us how fantastic we’d done - it was unbelievable.

“At the Mall I tried to catch a glimpse of my loved ones and close friends who were waiting for me, cheering me home. I don’t mind saying there were tears. They were emotional times.”
