- Shirley Bartynek

Cancer survivor Mandy Mcauley of Larkhall got‘pretty Muddy’with Sky Sports personality Hayley Mcqueen - all in the name of charity.

The two ladies, who have both been affected by cancer, took the plunge into a mud bath in Glasgow’s busy Buchanan Street to show their support for an army of Scottishpower employees gearing up to get dirty at Cancer Research UK’S Pretty Muddy event at Bellahouston Park this weekend (Saturday, September 17).

Mandy is one of 350 Scottishpower employees taking on the muddy obstacle challenge in Glasgow.

Just before her 40th birthday, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was given the difficult news that it had spread to her lymph nodes and had to undergo a mastectomy.

Now cancer-free she is looking forward to tackling the event with her colleagues to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Hayley has offered her support to highlight the vital role that fundraising plays in the fight against cancer.

The broadcaster understands the importance of finding a cure – after her dad, ex-scotland footballer Gordon Mcqueen, underwent treatment for throat cancer in 2011.

He too, has been given the all clear and Hayley is determined to wants to do her bit to help raise awareness of the disease.

Mandy said:“they say life begins at 40 but for me, I had to face up to the fact that it might mean the opposite.

“I had to come to terms with this while undergoing chemo and having a mastectomy. It was a terrifying time but I fought it head on with the support of my family and great girlfriends. I’m focused on raising as much funds as possible by taking on Pretty Muddy this month for one amazing charity.”

Mandy’s mud plunge is all part of her ongoing fundraising efforts.

She is hoping to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK through her Just Giving page: https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ Mandy-mcauley.

Hayley said:“it’s great to see so many women coming together to help beat cancer sooner and I’m thrilled to be supporting over 350 strong women from Scottishpower taking on the challenge together.

“It was such a shock to be told that my dad had cancer but we got through it as a family and I don’t know what I would have done without the support of my friends.“

Scottishpower is the Official Energy Sponsor of Cancer Research UK’S Race for Life and since 2012 has raised more than £9million as part of a wider partnership with the charity.

Mark Bowen, UK Marketing Director, said:“our commitment to making a difference at Scottishpower stretches beyond energy. Our employees have gone above and beyond to raise funds for Cancer Research UK over the past four years. Their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in the battle against cancer is hugely inspiring.

Susan Johnstone, Cancer Research UK’S national event manager in Scotland, said:“

“There’s still time to sign up to take part in Pretty Muddy Glasgow or Edinburgh on Saturday September 17. So we hope ladies will grab the opportunity to sign up today at raceforlife.org and help Cancer Research UK to make advances in research which will help more men, women and children in Scotland survive.”
