Tournament to pave way for girls teams

Greetland Goldstars are hoping to launch one or two girls teams to compete in the West Riding Girls League after staging a successful schools tournament. The West Riding County FA has been working with the club, which has Charter Standard status, as part of a focus on female football for primary school girls .

The County FA delivered coaching sessions in four local primary schools – Greetland Academy, Copley, Salterhebb­le J & I and Elland CE J & I primary schools.

The sessions were delivered to girls in years three and four by West Riding coach Mark Brier, assisted by Luke Whitworth from the club.

At the end of the coaching Goldstars organised a mini festival and handed out certificat­es and medals to all the girls that took part.

Greetland are hoping the success of England’s ladies team at the World Cup will inspired the next generation of players and the club are holding training sessions on Thursday evenings for girls in years three and four.

Sessions are on Thursday evenings between 5.30pm and 6.30pm at Greetland Community Centre, Rochdale Road Greetland. Greetland Goldstars Ability Counts teams completed a sponsored marathon around Savile Park on Sunday .

It was to raise funds for new trainings top for next season’s league and cup games.

Twenty six players, coaches and family members completed a one mile lap.

Training sessions are on Saturdays, more details from John King on 07982 801988 HAFC Wildcats enjoyed success in the sun, in their first tournament this season.

The Huddersfie­ld League One side are Thornhill Gala 2015 under 11 champions.

The six-a-side competitio­n saw a high standard of play from all junior teams, including Ossett Town and Norristhor­pe,

HAFC won all their five matches, scoring six goals and conceding none.

That was in spite of one of their heroes, Fletcher Bazunu, suffering a fractured arm in his semi-final.

HAFC are sponsored by Mcdonald’s at Salterhebb­le

They are looking to recruit two more experience­d players for next season.

Contact coach Dave Veitch for more details on veitch64@ btinternet.com. Elland Boys’ Brigade and the 17th Highgate Company have been crowned joint champions of the Halifax Battalion Boys’ Brigade Junior Section football league.

The league featured 10 Boys Brigade Companies in Calderdale and was played out over two months. The will share the trophy.

The pair were unbeaten and fought out a 4-4 draw.
