The Leo Group - proud of its Calderdale roots
The Leo Group is one of the UK’s leading environmental companies, playing an increasingly significant role in the country’s waste management and recycling industries.
It is also a key player in the British meat industry, specialising in the collection and processing of animal by-products into meals, oils and pet food ingredients, which it exports to markets around the world.
Started in the late 1970s, on a smallholding on the edge of Halifax, Leo Group now employs a workforce of more than 400 and manages operations across the UK and Ireland.
The family-run firm is incredibly proud of its Calderdale roots, and is committed to playing a major role in the community through continual investment in its Swalesmoor Farm headquarters and by being a major employer in the area.
From providing skips for household waste, to the collection of animal by-products to create oils used in biofuels, the Group covers every level of the food chain.
Every year it collects and processes in excess of 650,000 tonnes of waste material. From this processing operation it produces 130,000 tonnes of protein meal and 70 million litres of purified fats per year.
Leo Group’s meal and fats are used across a range of industries, including the biofuels, cosmetics, pet food, oleo chemical, agricultural and power industry.
This year, the company boosted its green credentials further when it added Belgium-based renewable company BioPower – a pioneer in the field of biomass - to its portfolio of companies.
As a way of giving something back to Calderdale, in 2011 it launched its Community Fund. Over the past four years it has awarded monetary grants to the tune of more than £200,000 to a host of local charities and good causes.
Its staff take part in individual and team fund-raising activities, these include running the Jane Tomlinson 10k to entering the annual “Mascot Gold Cup”.
This year, it is proud to have its name associated with the Halifax Courier Community Spirit Awards, and, in particular, to be sponsoring the Supporting Older People in Calderdale category.
