signs have gone up in Hebden Bridge as the town marks the 500th birthday of the bridge over the River Hebden that gave the town its name. The signs, with a unique typeface and the date 1510, have gone up at approaches to the town on Burnley Road on the Burnley side and at the Mytholm turning circle on the approach fromTodmor­den. A third sign has been installed at the town’s rail station.

more than 100 years as a familiar landmark in Hipperholm­e the Victorian brewing house mill tower will soon be no more. It is to be demolished to make way for housing. As the s tone building is unlisted and is not in a conservati­on area it has no protection from demolition.

years ago A major piece of Calderdale’s industrial heritage has returned to life now that the restored Rochhdale Canal once again links Yorkshire and Lancashire. The waterway was declared open when the mayors of Calderdale and Rochdale met in barges at the county boundary and shook hands. The relinking at Warland Swing bridge, near Todmorden, followed eight years of reservatio­n work by Calderdale Council in partnershi­p with Rochdale Council. A new tunnel was also opened at Copperas Culvert, Walsden, Todmorden, where boats can now pass along a stretch that used to run through a pipe.

years ago 17-month-old baby is recovering at Halifax General Hospital after being rescued from the bedroom of a smoke-filled house at Lee Mount, Halifax. Firemen had to give her the kiss of life. A passer-by on his way home from work climbed a ladder, smashed an upstairs window at the house in Fairview Terrace and lifted the baby from her cot. He was treated for cuts to an arm and leg.

100-year-old family link with the Mytholmroy­d clothing firm of Helliwell and Sutcliffe has been broken with the retirement of managing director Margaret Sutcliffe. The business has been taken over by a Stockport firm and Miss Suitcliffe entertaine­d staff, workpeople and other guests at a dinner in the Civic Hall, Hebden Bridge. The firm was started by cousins Tom Helliwell and Dan Sutcliffe.
