Preparing for working life

- By staff & students of the maltings college

There have been a number of developments at The Maltings recently, including new support from leadership at Trinity Academy, an outstanding 11-18 secondary school. The team is working to transform the experience on offer at The Maltings, and ensure that students can make the most of the exceptional facilities on offer.

The college is located just ten minutes out of Halifax town centre, and has purpose built facilities including a garage, hair and beauty salon, fully equipped professional kitchens and a nursery. These allow The Maltings to offer a bespoke experience for students that helps them to prepare for working life.

Stepping into any of these facilities is like stepping in to a real business – you will find trainee mechanics fixing cars in the garage using the latest snap-on tools and beauticians applying shellac nails in the salon.

From September 2015, the Maltings will focus on core specialisms which include a range of level one and level two courses in hairdressing, catering, beauty, light vehicle maintenance, health and social care, childcare and ICT. Each of these courses is designed to make best use of the facilities on offer, allowing students to learn on the job and gain essential skills and knowledge for the working environment.

The college is small, ensuring that as well as being supported to train for the workplace, young people learn in an environment where staff know their name and help them make the transition to being successful in employment.

Acting principal Michael Gosling said: “The Maltings offers something special to including waxing, spray tanning and massage. Students are fully supervised by tutors, and work to offer exactly the same warm, welcoming the young people of Halifax. Not only can they secure their qualification, they do so in an environment built to reflect the one that they will experience when they secure employment.

“As a college we focus on our core specialisms, allowing us to make best possible use of these facilities and ensure our students are fully prepared for success in the world of work.” and relaxing experience you would expect in a hairdressers or salon.
