Green and Queens Head book final appearances

-

FC Bowling Green set up a Briggs Priestley Senior Cup final with either Carrington or Elland after beating fellow Premier Division side Waiters Arms 3-1.

Green controlled the game for long periods and thoroughly deserved to progress despite Waiters playing their part in a decent game.

Dan Taylor’s side hit the front after 10 minutes when Oli Smith and Tom Holroyd combined to free Gary Ash who finished well.

Waiters came into the game as the half progressed, but were unable to trouble James Billington in the Green goal.

Green needed to be focused at the back at the start of the second half, but they weathered the storm and doubled their advantage when Andrew Sutcliffe put Holroyd through and he held off his man before slotting home.

The tie was put to bed soon after when Sutcliffe’s cross from the right was headed back by Smith and Ash volleyed home.

Waiters pulled a goal back through Billy Grogan’s long range effort which took a wicked bobble past Billington, but Green saw the game out comfortably. Queens Head will contest their first ever final after beating Bradshaw 4-2 to reach the Bridge Balti League Cup showpiece.

Queens have been running for around eight years and Ian Pickard, who runs the club with his son Craig, said they were over the moon to have got through.

“We are absolutely delighted - it feels really good to get to a final,” said Pickard.

“We are extremely pleased and proud for the players and we will look forward to the day and make sure we enjoy it.

“It is going to be hard but at the end of the day it is cup football and anything can happen.

“We are there on merit so we should feel confident.”

A good game between two determined sides saw Queens take the lead after two minutes when Jordan Peel’s run and cross was turned into his own net by a defender.

Bradshaw levelled before half-time after which Luke Eastwood put Queens ahead.

Martin Cannon beat the offside trap to make it 3-1 and although Bradshaw pulled a second goal back Anthony Fenwick latched onto a through ball to wrap things up.
