Calderdale hoping for favour from Celtic in safety quest

-

Just how disappointing the 2013-2014 season has been for Calderdale Netball Club will become a little clearer tomorrow.

The club’s second and third teams have been relegated and the fate of the firsts depends on a match in which they are not involved - and then possibly a play-off game.

The automatic relegation slots in the West Yorkshire Super League have been filled by Tornadoes and Calderdale 2, whose brave fight to keep their heads above water was ended by 39-28 defeat at the hands of Shipley six days ago.

The third- from- bottom slot will be filled by either Calderdale firsts or Hi-Lites, who are a point behind them.

Calderdale gave themselves a fighting chance of avoiding a play- off game against the third-placed finishers in the Premier by beating Tornadoes 57-45 in their final game last Saturday.

However, a win for Hi-Lites against Farsley Celtic tomorrow would push Calderdale back into the bottom three.

Old Brodleians are runners- up to Tykes 1 in the Premier, finishing their campaign with a 52-25 success away to ANC last weekend.

Calderdale 3 have won only one match in Division One. They lost 69-26 to Shipley 2 last weekend and complete their programme against Wakefield Wildcats 1 tomorrow.

First team captain Jane

- Parker had two out of three shooters unavailable last weekend.

However, Laura Kennedy and Kim Roy stepped in to bail them out for their most crucial match of the season and the side did more than enough to collect three precious points.

Calderdale 2 knew it was going to be a tough against Shipley but after two wins in a row were ready for a battle.

They started strongly, accurate passing and excellent feeding into the attacking circle by wing attack Lisa Lund and centre Sarah Heaton allowing Elaine Douris and Kim Roy the opportunity to score.

It was goal for goal throughout the first quarter, which ended 9-9.

Calderdale found it difficult to move the ball down court and struggled to break Shipley’s defensive zone in the next 15 minutes and fell behind 20-17.

Calderdale continued to defend well down court and there were some brilliant interceptions from wing defence Megan Woodworth, who was their player of the match.

Goal defence Kate Ineson and goalkeeper Sue Greenwood forced errors from Shipley’s attack and collected possession from the few missed shots.

Trailing 31-27 heading into the final quarter, Calderdale brought on Kirsty Dow to try to create some space in midcourt and help the flow of the game.

However, despite Calderdale’s determination, Shipley further extended their lead.
