Plans for bigger Peaks Parkway junction move to next stage

COUNCIL WANTS NEW ENTRANCE FOR ITS DOUGHTY ROAD DEPOT

- By JAMIE WALLER

PLANS to create a new junction for the Doughty Road depot onto Peaks Parkway are moving forwards.

The council is set to make a new entrance as it combines its existing depots in the town centre.

The upgrade to the Doughty Road site in Grimsby will require a change to the layout.

The council and Engie want to create a new access road at the junction with B&Q and Halfords, which most traffic will use entering and leaving the site.

A transport report into the proposal by a specialist firm of traffic engineers has found that it won’t have a significant impact to sustainable travel, traffic impact or road safety.

They add: “As the impact of the proposals is not expected to be severe, the proposals are therefore considered to be in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).”

A formal planning application will be submitted soon which could see work start later this year.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said: “Bringing our depots together on one site will reduce our property maintenance costs, improve service efficiency and provide good quality facilities for the workforce.

“Doughty Road Depot is becoming outdated and will need to be redeveloped to cater for the services that will be based there.

“The property improvements will also help us improve the energy efficiency of our buildings and move toward a zero-emissions vehicle fleet.

“These are proposals at this stage, we need to go through the formal planning process before any work can start.

“We aim to submit a planning application in the next couple of months and, if successful, start work later in the year.”

The plans will now be considered at North East Lincolnshire Council’s Cabinet meeting next week (July 14).

The council currently has two depots for operational services, the other being at Gilbey Road.

These sites are for services such as waste and recycling, highway maintenance, fleet management, street cleansing, security, civil enforcement, property maintenance, licensing, grounds maintenance and ecology.
