A BRAVE ‘sole’ inspired by the struggles of people close to her is taking part in a charity fire walk challenge to raise cash for a vital local cause.

Karen Taylor will brave hot coals later this month as part of a donation drive for lifeline addiction charity Moving On Inverclyde.

The Greenock mum hopes her efforts will support the charity’s important work of helping people recover from addiction and move on with their life.

The 45-year-old, who has friends and family who have been affected by addiction, told the Tele that she was looking forward to taking part in the event on Friday, March 15.

She said: “This is really personal for me.

“I’ve seen how people with addictions are treated and it absolutely sickens me.

“People are so quick to pass comment and judgement, but it could happen to a member of their family easily.

“These attitudes make it harder for people to reach out and get help.

“The work that Moving On do to help people with sobering up is just the beginning, they support people with the next chapter of their life and put in place things that support them.

“There’s counselling available, there’s money help available, there’s so many different groups they collaborate with too.

“They’re a fantastic organisation.”

Karen believes there is still a

lot of work to be done to break through the stigma around the subject and get people the help they need.

She added: “Deaths involving drugs and alcohol are continuing to rise and I think it’s because everything is falling on deaf ears.

“People need to support the charities that are willing to

help the people that are going through this.

“I don’t think there is enough support for groups like Moving On, they’ve got to fight for funding every year and anything I can do to help support them is a bonus.

“It should be more of a normality, rather than a taboo subject that’s hidden away.

“We’re so lucky to have Moving On here in Inverclyde and the work they do it so important.

“I’m really looking forward to taking part in the fire walk and I think it’ll be a wonderful event for a great group.”
