A Place in the Sun

La Cala is a superb 54-hole resort offering luxury in a prime location in the heart of the Andalusian countryside, just half an hour from Malaga Airport

-

a Cala Resort, at the foot of the mountains near Mijas on Spain’s Costa del Sol, offers a veritable feast of golf. There are three superb championship courses to explore, America, Europa and Asia, all designed by renowned American architect Cabell Robinson. Each track provides a slightly different style and feel, but all offer exceptional quality and tremendous views of the beautiful Andalusian countryside. Excellent off-course facilities complete the golfing package.

With spectacular holes set across a beautiful Andalusian landscape, the stand-out feature of the recently revamped Campo America is the golfing variety to be enjoyed. The early holes are played over a valley floor, with the layout then climbing to a series of upland holes that present amazing views to the mountains one way and the Mediterranean the other. The run for home winds through the trees via a series of challenging raised greens.

LCampo Europa features dramatic changes in elevation and excellent holes within distinct, memorable sections – first defined by the attractive River Ojen, then on to higher ground before travelling back down towards the pretty valley.

The picturesque Campo Asia is a garden-style course with trees, shrubs and flowers enhancing the aesthetics. It’s the oldest of La Cala’s three layouts and has a mature feel, with rolling fairways and great views of the surrounding countryside. It’s relatively forgiving thanks to wide fairways, backstops on many greens and less severe run-offs.

The resort recently upgraded its buggy fleet and has a superb golf academy, with tuition and analysis available from experienced PGA professionals. There’s also a six-hole par-3 course to enjoy and excellent programmes for junior golfers.

Just a 30-minute drive from Malaga Airport, La Cala Resort is an idyllic rural retreat offering great peace and quiet, despite its proximity to the bustling Costa del Sol. The luxurious 107-bedroom hotel offers a captivating blend of Andalusian and contemporary style, with dining of the very highest standard in its renowned La Terraza and La Bodega restaurants.

The hotel’s spa, with its hydrotherapy circuit and range of treatments to soothe the weariest golfers, is one of Europe’s very best. With a wide range of off-course activities and sightseeing opportunities, golfing guests to La Cala will enjoy their time off the fairways as much as on them.
