Robins wait on cut from Mo move
Club could get windfall as striker makes move to Peterborough,
CHELTENHAM Town could be set for a cut of the fee after former striker Mo Eisa left Bristol City to join Peterborough United on a four year deal.
The League One club say they have have “smashed” their previous record transfer of £1.25m for Britt Assombalonga from Watford in July 2013.
Cheltenham are due to receive a percentage of any profit made by Bristol City, who signed Eisa last July for £800,000 up front followed by another guaranteed £200,000 this summer.
The payment from Peterborough is thought to be due in instalments, so Cheltenham may not receive any payment immediately.
Peterborough, now managed by Darren Ferguson, were one of the clubs chasing him before his move to Ashton Gate, along with Sunderland and Portsmouth.
Posh chairman Darragh Macanthony told the club’s official website: “It is no secret we made four bids for Mo last summer as he is the type of striker that ticks every box, criteria wise, for a ‘Posh signing.’
“He is quick, technically fantastic and has the ability to improve with us and step up a level.
“I have known about him for a few years. He had a fantastic goal record at Cheltenham Town and that earned him a big move to the Championship.
“He was really unfortunate because he got injured early on at Bristol City and then the form that they displayed meant it was difficult for him to get into the line-up.”
Eisa was wanted by two Championship clubs as well as a host of League One sides, according to Macanthony.
The 24-year-old front man said: “I know all about the strikers that have scored goals for Peterborough in the past and hopefully I can do that here.
“I want to score goals, but I am not selfish, it is about the team and the team’s objective is to get to the Championship and I want to help the team in that goal. I am looking forward to getting started.”
Eisa joined Cheltenham in July 2017 after a successful trial, having left Isthmian League Greenwich Borough.
He scored 25 goals in his season with the Robins, 23 of which came in League Two.
He was then restricted to one League Cup start for Bristol City along with five substitute appearances in the Championship, hampered by an ankle injury early in the 2018/19 campaign.
Peterborough had been keen on him since facing him in a friendly at Whaddon Road in the summer of 2017, just after he had joined the Robins.
The London Road club also made an approach to sign Eisa in January 2018.
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry says Eisa wasted a year at Bristol City.
Fry had been keen on Eisa since seeing him shine for Cheltenham in a preseason friendly against Peterborough at Whaddon Road in July 2017.
After 25 goals in his season at Cheltenham, Eisa switched to Bristol City,
and we advised him he’d be better off with us, but he wanted to try the Championship.
“He’s wasted his time there and we are delighted to get him. We are convinced he will be a big hit for us.
“He’s quick and that’s something we lacked up front last season.
“It might seem a lot of money, but it’s not a risk as far as I’m concerned.”
