Bespoke textile art created to honour shortlisted artists
IN addition to winning a cash prize, each of those shortlisted for the Scottish Album of Year Award will be presented with a distinctive piece of bespoke textile art by winner of the SAY Design Commission, Obsidian Ore.
Geri Donnelly, left, designer and owner at Obsidian Ore, has fused different fabrics and threads together to create each unique artwork, which embraces and reflects on Paisley’s rich textile heritage and the iconic Paisley Shawls.
The prizes will feature a soundwave of snippet of the hero song from each of the shortlisted albums.
Geri said: “When I read the brief, connecting Paisley’s textile heritage and the celebration of music together just sounded challenging and fun to explore.
“I started trying out ways I could show sound waves through fabric including embroidery, digital print and fusing different textures together.”
The textile design graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design has been working with Renfrewshire Council’s InCube business incubator scheme which provides funding and support to creative businesses.
Geri continued: “Being at InCube with other great, creative people has been amazing and so insightful and I am so lucky to have all the guidance and knowledge from everyone there”.
Geri was selected for the SAY commission after entering a competition by the organisers of
The SAY Award, the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA).
Hilary Goodfellow, campaign producer for The SAY Award, said: “The SAY Design Commission recognises the enduring links that exist between the fields of music, art and design in Scotland, and it was a really pleasure to again partner with InCube.
“Judging the submissions was really difficult as the standard was so high, but we all felt that Geri’s prizes are fantastically creative response to the brief.
“We loved that each piece is totally bespoke incorporating a soundwave from each artist’s Shortlisted album.
“Each unique piece echoes Paisley’s textile heritage while celebrating Scotland’s thriving creative community and music scene.
“Each prize is a beautiful and bespoke momento, which I’m sure this year’s Shortlisted artists will be absolutely delighted to receive.”
