Major revamp move for old shipyard site

-

PLANS for Scotway House are part of raft of improvements planned for the former shipyard site and the area around it.

Two years ago, the previous site owners, Peel Group unveiled plans to build a cinema and 170,000 sq ft of retail space and the proposals are now in the hands of Glasgow City Council.

Late 2018 was given as an initial completion date.

The developers hope the project will bring “the West End back to the river” and encourage more visitors away from the city centre.

Plans are also underway to build a new footbridge across the Clyde, offering a link between Govan and Partick.

The bridge proposal is part of the £1.13billion Glasgow City Region City Deal, and construction is expected to begin in 2019.

Across the Clyde, a £17million masterplan has been unveiled for the Water Row site in Govan.

The proposals include 100 mid-market rentals and 32 homes for social rent as well as a retail and leisure development and work expected to start around September, next year.

In November, last year, a bold plan emerged to transform one of the last remaining 1930s super cinemas in the UK into a concert venue.

Govan Housing Association is hoping to buy the B listed Lyceum which is in a poor and deteriorating condition.

It wants to bring the building back into use for the benefit of local people as a community owned concert and events venue.

The Lyceum opened in December 1938 and sat 2600 people.
