Labour in rosette tribute at council stalwart’s funeral
Political Correspondent LABOUR politicians paid a colourful party tribute to Alistair Watson at the funeral of the long-serving Glasgow councillor.
A service for the Cardonald councillor, who died last week, was held at Govan Old Parish Church.
Labour councillors from Glasgow and the west of Scotland attended with MSPs and party members. Many wore red Labour rosettes at the request of Mr Watson’s daughter as a tribute to the party stalwart.
Labour group leader on Glasgow City Council Frank McAveety as well as colleagues Bill Butler, and Matt Kerr took part in the rosette tribute.
Glasgow MSP Anas Sarwar was also seen leaving the church wearing his rosette.
Glasgow Lord Provost Eva Bolander represented the council and current leader of Glasgow City Council, Susan Aitken and former Lord Provost, Sadie Docherty, was also present.
Flowers spelling out ‘Dad’ ‘Granda’ and ‘Brother’ were in the hearse as it left the church yard.
Mr Watson is survived by his two children Cheryl and Jordan, and granddaughter Evie.
Motions of condolence and tributes to Mr Watson were lodged at both the Scottish Parliament and Westminster, recognising Mr Watson’s commitment to his constituents and community.
Johann Lamont, former Scottish Labour leader, paid the tribute at Holyrood.
She said Mr Watson gave “years of dedicated service” and “who fought passionately and tirelessly for social justice on behalf of his community and city”.
At Westminster Glasgow South West SNP MP Chris Stephens placed a motion stating Mr Watson was a “tireless local champion for the community of Cardonald for 22 years”.
He added: “Mr Watson was well known for being a robust debater but with a smile and a handshake for his political opponents, was respected and valued by everyone who worked with him and who experienced the pride and passion he had for his work.”
